Helping Haiti

Thanks to your generous contributions we were able to send $2,000 to the American Red Cross Haitian Relief Fund and $369.98 to the Art Creation Foundation for Children. Donations were collected in classrooms and beads were sold during our Mardi Gras celebration. The funds raised will support relief efforts in Haiti which was devastated after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck on January 12, 2010.

How to Read a Blueprint

Helen Mangelsdorf, SRS Art Teacher, approached Home & School Dimensions in S.T.E.M. Chairperson, Linda Armour early in the school year with a vision.   Based on recent personal experiences with blueprints, Teacher Helen became determined that all students should know how to read blueprints.  Expressing 3-dimensional objects in 2-dimensional form and interpreting a 2-dimensional drawing as a 3 dimensional object are skills that can be very effectively taught and incorporated in the SRS Art curriculum.  Together with Linda Armour, a four-session program was developed using an AIA “Architecture in Education” curriculum as a guide.  Parents of 4th graders who work every day with blueprints have volunteered their time and their enthusiasm to teach the children how to read a blueprint, often providing visual aids from their workplace.  Thank you to parents Al Federico, P.E., Stan Tang, R.A., David Virgil, R.A., Scott Holsinger, P.E., and Jaime Burdette, P.E. for contributing their expertise to help teach our children this important and useful skill of blueprint reading.  This program will continue up until Spring Break in all 4th grade art classes.
